London Expat Describes Eight Loud Bangs Over Abu Dhabi During Iranian Missile Attack
A British national living in Dubai reported hearing eight distinct loud bangs over Abu Dhabi as the United Arab Emirates intercepted multiple ballistic missiles launched by Iran. This retaliatory strike followed joint US-Israeli military operations earlier on Saturday, February 28, 2026, escalating regional tensions significantly.
Airport Chaos and Civilian Casualty Reported
The UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed it successfully intercepted several missiles using advanced air defense systems. However, falling debris from the intercepted projectiles caused material damage in a residential area and resulted in one civilian fatality, identified as an Asian national. The ministry strongly condemned the attack as a dangerous escalation that threatens civilian safety.
Jamie Smith, a Londoner who relocated to Dubai in 2023 and manages stores at Dubai International Airport, described the chaotic aftermath. "The main situation has been now eight loud bangs as missiles have been destroyed over the city. After you can see puffs of white smoke where this was," Smith told MyLondon. He added that military aircraft were actively patrolling the skies following the incident.
Travel Disruption and Shelter-in-Place Orders
The missile attack triggered widespread flight cancellations and subsequent airspace closures, creating massive disruptions at Dubai International Airport. Smith reported that authorities were "funnelling people back out of the airport through arrivals as there's so many cancellations," with huge numbers of travelers stranded in the terminal.
The UK government has issued urgent guidance for British nationals in Middle Eastern countries, advising them to "immediately shelter in place" until the security situation stabilizes. Despite the attacks, Smith expressed confidence in UAE authorities, stating he felt safe because the government remained on "full alert" following the incident.
Regional Escalation and Official Response
This attack represents a significant escalation in regional conflicts, coming hours after US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Former US President Donald Trump announced via video message that he was launching "major combat operations" in Iran, though details remain unclear.
The UAE Ministry of Defence emphasized that "the safety of citizens, residents and visitors remains a top priority that cannot be compromised." Officials urged the public to rely exclusively on official sources for information and avoid spreading unverified reports about the developing situation.
Authorities confirmed that while the security situation remains stable, all concerned entities are monitoring developments around the clock to ensure public safety. The ministry reaffirmed the UAE's categorical rejection of any targeting of civilian infrastructure and national institutions.
