Iran Vows Retaliation After US Seizes Tanker

Iran Issues Stark Warning of Imminent Retaliation Following US Tanker Seizure

Iran has issued a forceful warning that it will "soon retaliate" against the United States after American military forces seized an Iranian-flagged tanker near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The dramatic maritime confrontation has significantly escalated tensions between the two nations, threatening to undermine fragile ceasefire arrangements in the region.

Military Command Condemns "Armed Piracy" by US Forces

The Hazrat Khatam al-Anbiya military command, Iran's top military authority, released a strongly worded statement condemning what it described as "armed piracy" by American forces. According to the statement, US military personnel violated an eleventh-hour two-week ceasefire by firing upon the commercial vessel M/V Touska in the waters of the Sea of Oman.

The Iranian military command stated: "Aggressor America, violating the ceasefire and engaging in maritime piracy, fired upon one of Iran's commercial ships in the waters of the Sea of Oman and disabled its navigation system. They further assaulted the vessel by landing a number of their terrorist riflemen onto the deck of the mentioned vessel."

The statement, shared through the Iranian Mehr News Agency, contained an explicit warning: "We warn that the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond to and retaliate against this armed piracy by the US military."

Six-Hour Standoff in Gulf of Oman

The confrontation unfolded yesterday when US Marines from the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli seized the cargo vessel during a tense six-hour standoff in the Gulf of Oman. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the tanker as it attempted to sail toward the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.

Iranian ports are currently under a US blockade, a policy implemented in response to Iran's announcement that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz would need to pay a toll. The Spruance fired several warning rounds into the area before boarding the ship after instructing the Touska crew to evacuate the engine room.

CENTCOM officials stated that the M/V Touska had "failed to comply with repeated warnings" from US naval forces. In a detailed operational account, CENTCOM described how Marines departed the Tripoli by helicopter and rappelled onto the Iranian vessel, ultimately "disabling Touska's propulsion" system.

Conflicting Accounts of the Confrontation

The incident has generated sharply contrasting narratives from the involved parties. Former US President Donald Trump commented on the situation through a Truth Social post, stating: "The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom."

Meanwhile, Iranian media presented a different version of events, reporting that "aggressive" American forces "opened fire on an Iranian merchant ship to force it to return to Iranian territorial waters." According to marine monitoring website MarineTraffic, the seized vessel is currently positioned off the coast of the port city of Beris.

Broader Diplomatic Context

This maritime confrontation occurs against a backdrop of deteriorating diplomatic relations between Tehran and Washington. Iran recently rejected participation in a second round of peace talks, even as the US President threatened to target Iran's civilian infrastructure. The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Iran's official state news outlet, confirmed that Iran would not be taking part in the ongoing peace negotiations.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of global oil shipments pass. Any sustained conflict in this region could have significant implications for international energy markets and global security.
