Prosecutors in Florida are pursuing the death penalty against a Haitian man accused of fatally attacking a gas station clerk with a hammer in a brutal incident captured on surveillance footage. The case has drawn national attention and become part of the broader debate over U.S. immigration policy.
Indictment and Charges
Rolbert Joachin, 40, was indicted by a Lee County grand jury for the murder of Nilufa Easmin, 51, who was working at a gas station in Fort Myers when she was attacked on April 2. According to investigators, Easmin confronted Joachin outside the station after he allegedly smashed her car's windshield. The situation escalated into a violent assault, with Joachin repeatedly striking Easmin in the face and head with a hammer. The attack, recorded on CCTV, was described by authorities as 'extremely brutal and incredibly violent.'
Prosecutor's Statement
State Attorney Amira Fox announced the indictment on Thursday, emphasizing the severity of the crime. 'This crime was so violent, so extreme, so unwarranted... It is something that – once seen – is never to be forgotten,' Fox said, as reported by Fox News. She thanked the grand jury for reviewing the gruesome evidence and confirmed that prosecutors would seek the death penalty if Joachin is convicted. 'He will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. We will seek the death penalty in this case,' she stated.
Victim and Community Response
Easmin was described as a mother working to support her family. Her death has sparked widespread reaction in the local community. Fox noted, 'This defendant entered the United States illegally and brutally ended the life of a mother simply at her job, working to provide for her family.'
Manhunt and Arrest
After the attack, Joachin fled on foot, prompting a citywide manhunt across Fort Myers. Police eventually tracked him down and arrested him. Further details about the trial date have not been released by Fort Myers police.
Immigration and Political Reaction
Joachin's migrant status has fueled political debate. President Donald Trump commented on the case via Truth Social, criticizing former President Joe Biden's administration for Joachin's immigration history. Trump wrote, 'An Illegal Alien Criminal from Haiti, who was released into our Country by the WORST President in History, Crooked Joe Biden, and the Radical Democrats in Congress, just beat an innocent woman to death with a hammer at a gas station in Florida. The video of her brutal slaying is one of the most vicious things you will ever see.' He argued the case underscores the need for stricter immigration enforcement and criticized judges blocking his policies.
Joachin's Immigration Status
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Joachin first entered the U.S. in August 2022. He was issued a final order of removal by a federal judge but later granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a program allowing individuals from countries facing instability to remain temporarily. Trump has criticized TPS as 'massively abused and fraudulent.' Joachin remained in the country after his TPS expired in 2024.
The case continues to develop as legal proceedings move forward.
