Counter-Terror Police Lead Investigation into Hendon Arson Attack on Shop

Counter-terrorism police are spearheading a probe into an arson attack on a business in Hendon, northwest London, citing "similarities" with recent incidents in the area. The investigation, while not currently treated as terrorism, involves specialized units due to concerning patterns.

Incident Details and Police Response

Police were alerted at 10:31 PM on Friday, April 17, following reports of the attack. The London Fire Brigade also responded to the scene. According to witness accounts, a man approached a row of shops carrying a plastic bag containing three bottles filled with liquid. He placed the bag next to a building and set it alight, but the bottles failed to fully ignite, prompting the suspect to flee.

Minor damage was inflicted on the shopfront, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The investigation is being led by Counter Terrorism Policing London, with support from officers from the North West Command Unit. Authorities emphasize that the motive remains under review, and no arrests have been made at this time.

Official Statements and Community Concerns

Helen Flanagan, Commander at Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated, "At this stage, last night’s arson is not being linked to other incidents in the North West London area over the last week or last month’s arson in Golders Green, but Counter Terrorism officers are leading due to the similarities of each attack." She urged anyone with information or footage to contact police immediately, vowing relentless pursuit of those responsible for such hateful acts against London’s communities.

Luke Williams, Detective Chief Superintendent leading policing in the area, acknowledged community fears, saying, "Since the incident in Golders Green last month, we have spoken extensively to community leaders. I understand and appreciate their concerns, and I know this latest incident will add to fears in the community." He assured that local officers are collaborating closely with Counter Terrorism Policing to support the investigation.

Heightened Security Measures

In response to the attack and previous incidents, police have implemented increased security measures. Williams noted, "The community can expect to see a heightened police presence in the area. Since last month’s attack in Golders Green, we have stepped up police patrols and vigilance to reassure communities and disrupt offenders." This includes armed police patrols and deployments of officers from Project Servator, who are specially trained to detect individuals planning criminal activities.

Authorities are urging the public to assist with the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 8987/17APRIL, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
