Aunt and Niece Murdered While Hiking in Utah's Capitol Reef Area

An aunt and her niece were tragically shot dead while hiking in what their family described as their favourite place on earth, according to police reports. The victims, identified as Linda Dewey, 65, and Natalie Graves, 34, were discovered at the Cockscomb Trailhead near Utah's Capitol Reef National Park. The suspect, Ivan W Miller, has been arrested and charged with their murders, as well as the killing of a third victim, Margaret Oldroyd, 86, in Lyman.

Details of the Triple Homicide

Court documents reveal a chilling sequence of events. Miller allegedly stayed overnight in a back shed at Ms Oldroyd's home before entering and shooting her in the back of the head with a pistol while she watched television. He then hid her body in the basement and stole her General Motors Buick LeSabre car. Dissatisfied with the stolen vehicle, Miller soon encountered Ms Dewey and Ms Graves on the trail and shot them both with the intent of taking their car.

The bodies of the hiking pair were later found by their partners. Police tracked Miller using number plate readers, following the vehicle through southern Utah into northern Arizona and eventually into Colorado, where it was abandoned in Pagosa Springs. Colorado law enforcement located and arrested Miller without incident early Thursday morning.

Family Tributes and Community Shock

A heartfelt statement from the victims' families paid tribute to both women, describing Ms Dewey as a loved deeply wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister, while Ms Graves was portrayed as joy, sunshine and beauty embodied. The statement expressed profound grief, noting that the family is dealing with the shock of the devastating loss of two members who were bonding over a hike in a place they cherished.

The family added, They were murdered. We cannot comprehend why this happened. We need time to mourn, love each other and be with our family and friends. They emphasized that the hiking area was considered a safe sanctuary by both the victims and the community, heightening the sense of violation and tragedy.

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Miller is in custody for the triple homicide. He was initially held at a jail in Colorado before being returned to Utah to face charges. The investigation highlights the use of technology, such as number plate readers, in apprehending the suspect quickly after the crimes.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond, raising concerns about safety in natural areas. Authorities continue to investigate the motives and circumstances surrounding these brutal murders, as the legal process against Miller moves forward.
