Wynne Evans Hospitalised After Suicide Attempt Following Strictly Exit
Wynne Evans in hospital after suicide attempt

Opera singer Wynne Evans has bravely disclosed that he was admitted to hospital after a serious attempt on his own life, a period of profound crisis that followed his contentious departure from Strictly Come Dancing.

The Darkest Chapter

The 53-year-old Welshman, best known for the Go Compare adverts, opened up about this deeply personal struggle during an emotional appearance on ITV's Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning. He spoke candidly with hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid about the events that led to his hospitalisation.

Evans stated plainly, 'I went on a dancing show and ended up trying to take my own life. I did end up in hospital. Somebody found me, rang an ambulance, and luckily for me, I'm here today.'

The Trigger: A Controversial Strictly Exit

This personal crisis unfolded in the wake of Evans's sensational firing from the BBC. His exit came after he was caught making a sexual remark about It Takes Two host Janette Manrara.

Soon after the incident became public, the singer issued a public apology, expressing that he was 'deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate action caused'. He announced he would be stepping away from the public eye for 'self-reflection' and to 'prioritise my wellbeing'.

This was followed by the BBC's decision not to renew his one-year rolling BBC Radio contract, a move that came after a four-month internal investigation.

A New Perspective on Mental Health

Reflecting on his mental state at the time, Evans explained to the Good Morning Britain hosts the distorted thinking that can accompany such despair. 'In your head, you go, "The only way I can make these people stop is by taking my life". You're punishing not them, you're actually punishing yourself and your family.'

He also shared a message of hard-won hope and understanding. 'It's given me a greater understanding of my own mental health and where I am in my life, and how I can help other people who don't want to talk about mental health,' Evans said.

He concluded with a powerful statement of resilience: 'I'm learning from my mistakes but not letting them define me for the rest of my life.'

This was not the first time Evans found himself at the centre of controversy during his time on the 2024 series of Strictly. He was also caught on live television putting his hand around the waist of his professional dance partner, Katya Jones. The pair later took to Instagram to clarify the moment was a 'joke' and insisted nothing untoward had occurred between them.
