A mother-of-three has revealed the devastating moment she was publicly escorted from a rollercoaster after being told her weight posed a risk to other riders, an experience that ultimately led to her losing more than 20 stone.
The Humiliating Incident That Changed Everything
Fiona Carter, 46, from Bexleyheath, was enjoying a family day out at a theme park when she attempted to board a rollercoaster. To her horror, the safety bar would not close over her body due to her size. Ride operators informed her that the attraction could not operate with her on board, stating she was putting others at risk.
"I was escorted off in front of hundreds of people," Fiona recalled. "I just wanted the ground to swallow me up. The embarrassment was overwhelming."
Life in Hiding After the Theme Park Trauma
The humiliating experience sent Fiona into social isolation. She began avoiding friends, family gatherings, and even simple activities with her three children—Adam, 19, Sara, 18, and Ryan, 12. She described herself as merely "existing" rather than living, hiding in the background of photographs and withdrawing from life.
"After that day at the theme park, I stopped going on days out altogether," she confessed. "Every social situation became painful, and I reached a point where I couldn't take it anymore."
The Medical Referral That Started the Journey
In August 2018, Fiona visited her GP and was referred for gastric bypass surgery. However, she was told she needed to lose three stone before the procedure could proceed. This requirement led her to join her local Slimming World group in September 2018, initially with the sole intention of losing enough weight to qualify for surgery.
"I was incredibly nervous before my first group meeting," Fiona admitted. "Having struggled with my weight for so long, the thought of others seeing me and discussing my size made me extremely anxious. Thankfully, my consultant Vikki and the group members were incredibly supportive and kept my information private."
From Surgery Candidate to Slimming World Success Story
By January 2019, Fiona had reached her initial three-stone weight loss goal. Instead of proceeding with surgery, she experienced a profound shift in mindset. The healthy eating plan—known as Food Optimising—proved so effective and sustainable that she decided to continue with Slimming World as a long-term solution.
"I wanted a healthier, permanent change rather than another quick fix," she explained. "I needed to learn how to eat well, build confidence, and set a positive example for my children. Slimming World gave me the belief I needed to make that transformation."
The Remarkable Physical Transformation
Fiona's commitment yielded extraordinary results. She dropped from 35 stone to 14 stone 6 pounds—a total loss of 20 stone 8 pounds—earning her the title of Slimming World's Greatest Loser 2026. All of this was achieved without any medical intervention, relying solely on the program's dietary guidance and support system.
Her dietary changes were dramatic:
- Before: Breakfast of four slices of white toast with thick butter and jam; lunch featuring two rounds of cheese, pickle, and mayonnaise sandwiches with three bags of crisps; dinner consisting of a large doner kebab and chips; snacks including family-size chocolate bars, boxes of cakes, and large tubs of ice cream.
- After: Breakfast of overnight oats with fat-free Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit; lunch of chicken and boiled egg salad; dinner of homemade Slimming World spaghetti bolognese with side salad; snacks like Hi-Fi bars, fresh fruit, and low-calorie crisps.
Rediscovering Life and Activity
As the weight came off, Fiona embraced an active lifestyle she never thought possible. Previously, light activities like playing with her children or climbing stairs left her breathless. Now, she visits the gym three times weekly, enjoys regular walks, and enthusiastically participates in family adventures.
"I feel stronger, more energetic, and capable of things I never imagined before," she said. "I love our family days out and finally feel like I'm living the life I always wanted."
The Support System That Made It Possible
Fiona credits her Slimming World group and consultant Vikki Walsh as crucial elements in her success. The weekly meetings provided a judgment-free environment where she felt understood and encouraged.
"The support in group kept me going," Fiona emphasized. "Knowing I wasn't alone and that people genuinely cared made all the difference. We were all in it together."
Vikki Walsh observed Fiona's transformation with admiration: "Watching Fiona blossom has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. She arrived carrying years of physical and emotional weight, but week by week her confidence grew. She's living proof of what's possible when compassion, community, and determination combine."
Looking Toward a Bright Future
Today, Fiona is engaged to her partner Steve and planning their wedding for March 2027. She looks forward to shopping for her wedding dress with confidence and marrying feeling amazing.
"Losing weight hasn't just changed my body—it's given me confidence, independence, and a happier, fuller life," she reflected. "I hope my story gives hope to others who feel trapped by their weight, showing that change is possible without drastic procedures. I've built habits I can maintain for life, and this feeling is everything I dreamed of."
Fiona continues to attend the Bexleyheath Slimming World group, maintaining her weight at 14 stone 6 pounds and embracing every new opportunity with her family.
