Lionel Messi's family has issued a statement revealing that his father, Jorge Messi, is experiencing a health issue but is 'progressing favourably' under medical care. The 68-year-old's condition remains undisclosed, and relatives have urged an end to speculation.
Emotional World Cup Performance
Argentina began their World Cup title defence with a 3-0 victory over Algeria on Wednesday, with Messi scoring a stunning hat-trick at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas. The 38-year-old, playing in his sixth World Cup, was seen wiping away tears after his opening goal in the 17th minute.
Head coach Lionel Scaloni also appeared emotional as he embraced Messi when Nico Paz replaced him in the 80th minute. When asked about his tears, Messi stated: 'Honestly, it's completely unrelated to the sport. I went through some difficult, complicated days. I'm grateful to the entire delegation, to my team-mates. They were always there for me.'
Family Statement
Following increased speculation, the Messi family released a statement via ESPN, saying: 'Given the versions, rumours, and speculation that have circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep displeasure at the lack of sensitivity, respect, and scruples with which some people have treated a strictly private and family matter.'
The statement added: 'The family also wishes to clarify that only his closest family members have accurate and reliable information about Jorge's condition. Therefore, any version, statement, or information that does not come from the family itself and its official channels should not be considered valid or true.'
They concluded: 'Any relevant updates will be communicated promptly by the family and through the appropriate channels.'
Jorge Messi's Role
Jorge has been central to Messi's career, serving as his agent and business manager since his teenage years and coaching him at local club Grandoli before Messi joined Newell's Old Boys in 1995.
Argentina next face Austria on June 23 and conclude Group J against Jordan on June 28.
