Lena Dunham, the creator and star of the HBO series Girls, has welcomed her first child, a daughter, with her husband Luis Felber. The baby was born via surrogate, as Dunham revealed in a personal essay published in Vogue on Wednesday.
The 40-year-old writer and actor disclosed that her daughter arrived 13 days after the expected due date. In the essay, Dunham described the intense experience of the birth, expressing awe at the surrogate's concentration and strength. She recounted hearing the baby's first cry and the emotional moment of seeing her face, noting that the newborn's eyes were “wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow, blinking rapidly.”
Dunham wrote that she greeted her daughter with the words: “Hello. I’m your mama. You … you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come.” She described feeling “bashful and dizzy with joy” in the moments after the birth.
Public Battle with Endometriosis and Fertility Struggles
Dunham has long been open about her health challenges, including nearly two decades of advanced endometriosis. At age 31, she underwent a total hysterectomy, which removed her uterus, cervix, and one ovary. This surgery followed a long period of chronic pain and was a turning point in her journey toward motherhood.
In a 2020 essay for Harper's Magazine, Dunham explained her decision to step away from what she called the “fertility-industrial complex.” She detailed how, after an unsuccessful IVF cycle, she made the choice to stop pursuing further medical interventions. In that essay, she wrote: “The moment I lost my fertility I started searching for a baby. At age thirty-one, after almost two decades of chronic pain caused by endometriosis and its little-studied ravages, I had my uterus, my cervix, and one of my ovaries removed.”
She also reflected on how her perspective shifted after the surgery, noting that before it, motherhood had seemed “likely but not urgent,” but afterward she became “keenly obsessed” with the idea of having a child.
Surrogacy Journey and New Beginnings
The Vogue op-ed marks the first public confirmation of the couple's surrogacy journey. Dunham's account focuses on the profound connection she felt during the birth, despite not carrying the child herself. She described sitting on a hospital bed, waiting for a glimpse of the baby, and being so focused on the surrogate that she forgot to look down until she heard the cry.
Dunham, who also starred in films such as Tiny Furniture and Sharp Stick, has been married to musician Luis Felber since 2021. The couple's new arrival adds a personal milestone to Dunham's career, which has included writing, directing, and acting.
The birth highlights the growing visibility of surrogacy as a path to parenthood, particularly for women who face medical barriers to pregnancy. Dunham's candid discussion of her endometriosis and hysterectomy has previously sparked conversations about women's health and fertility, and her latest essay continues that dialogue.
