EastEnders fans are terrified for Denise Fox (Diane Parish) after utterly devastating scenes revealed she has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a fast-growing and aggressive blood cancer. Over her twenty-year tenure in Walford, Denise has endured abusive relationships, the tragic death of her fiancé, being imprisoned by a serial killer, poverty, a love triangle, and murder-related psychosis. Yet her upcoming battle may prove to be her most challenging yet.
Denise's diagnosis and emotional breakdown
Earlier this month, amid the 'night that changes everything', viewers saw Denise struggle to cope with the enormity of her diagnosis. As other Albert Square residents attended Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw) and Vicki Fowler's (Alice Haig) wedding, Denise retreated to Fox & Hair, where Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) found her. Unable to contain her emotions, Denise broke down, terrified of what the news means for her future.
A consultant called Denise to return to hospital immediately for urgent treatment, but she refused in order to support her daughter Chelsea (Zaraah Abrahams), whose son Jordan Fox (Jahsaiah Williams) had been hit by Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt). Yolande gently encouraged her to open up to her family, and eventually Denise told her partner, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen). Jack urged her to go to hospital, but she wanted to wait for Chelsea.
Jack and Phil step in
Fearing that delaying treatment could worsen her condition, Jack sought help from Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), who convinced Denise to go to hospital. Initially refusing, Denise became emotional during Kim and Howie's engagement party and, in heartbreaking scenes, revealed her diagnosis to everyone in the pub, stating she is ready to begin treatment.
Fan reaction and social media outcry
Fans have taken to social media to share their heartbreak, terrified for Denise. One viewer on X urged Denise to see a doctor, while @1tashatasha said the Walford legend was 'making me bawl'. Other comments included:
- @jkirkmanmusic: 'I’mma be outraged if #EastEnders kill off Denise. Would be a monumental mistake.'
- @rose_symphony3: 'I can’t help feel they are doing a bit too much foreshadowing of Denise not surviving... making me wonder if maybe she will survive?'

Blood Cancer UK speaks out
Helen Rowntree, CEO of Blood Cancer UK, highlighted the importance of Denise's storyline: 'It’s been a privilege advising the EastEnders team to ensure Denise’s storyline reflects real experiences of people living with blood cancer. Blood cancers do not discriminate, yet experiences and outcomes can vary significantly, including by ethnicity. Being Black and living with an aggressive blood cancer like AML can bring additional challenges.'
