A man and a woman, both aged 90, have tragically died following a severe house fire in the north London suburb of Barnet.
Emergency Response in the Early Hours
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday 16 January 2026. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) received an emergency call shortly before 1.45am, reporting a blaze at a semi-detached property on Albemarle Road.
Fire crews from Barnet, Southgate, and Finchley fire stations rushed to the scene. In total, four fire engines and approximately 25 firefighters were deployed to combat the flames, which were located on the ground floor of the two-storey home.
Fatalities Despite Rescue Efforts
Firefighters bravely entered the burning building and managed to remove the two elderly occupants. Despite the swift actions of the emergency services, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: "Sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services, both were pronounced dead. Their next of kin have been informed, and they are currently being supported by specialist officers."
The fire was brought under control by 3.15am. Police had arrived shortly before 1.40am to assist with road closures around the area.

The cause of the fatal fire is currently unknown and is now the subject of a joint investigation. The London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police are leading the enquiries to determine the circumstances that led to the blaze.
