Ali Brandon, 37, and Dexter Lewis, 37, lost their North West London home to a fire that broke out in the early hours of September 7, 2026. The couple, along with their four-year-old and one-year-old sons, escaped unharmed, but the blaze destroyed their home and possessions, and because they lacked contents insurance, they are now relying on a GoFundMe page that has raised more than £16,000.
Fire Discovered Just Feet from Sleeping Child
Ali woke at around 4am after her air purifier switched off, and she noticed the power was out. Initially thinking it was a power cut, she went back to bed, but about 20 minutes later, she heard "loud banging sounds" and feared intruders. She and Dexter discovered the noise was slate tiles falling from the roof, and the terrace was "engulfed in flames" beside their sleeping four-year-old son.
"Our baby was sleeping a mere 10 feet away from this enormous blaze that later took over his room. It is quite surreal," Ali told PA Real Life. The couple frantically gathered their children, important documents, and cats before fleeing. Approximately 40 firefighters battled the blaze for two hours.
Family Escapes Without Contents Insurance
Ali said she was "just lucky" to have woken up, as the smoke alarms had not yet sounded, and she believes the fire had been burning for about 30 minutes before she noticed it. The fire destroyed the family's home, ruining their children's toys, school supplies, and Dexter's collection of football shirts dating back to his childhood. "We had building insurance, but we didn't have contents insurance," Ali explained, meaning many of their belongings will not be replaced.
Following investigations, forensic teams were unable to establish the cause of the blaze due to extensive damage but concluded it could have been an electrical fire that started on the terrace. The family is now "couch surfing" with loved ones, concerned about the financial impact of paying for a hotel, and have not yet contacted the council about temporary accommodation.
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
Dexter runs his own company and has been working until 10pm to keep the family afloat while dealing with "endless" calls and appointments. Ali said the experience has taken an "enormous toll" on their mental health, but the family is grateful for the support. Ali's sister, Jaqueline, set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised more than £16,000. "We are just so completely moved and touched, we never could have imagined the level of kindness and support from people," Ali said.
