Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a house fire in New Malden, with part of the ground floor, first floor, and roof of a two-storey semi-detached house alight. The blaze, which also set a car in the front garden on fire, broke out on Mount Pleasant Road on Saturday night, August 23.
Firefighters Deploy Turntable Ladder as Smoke Affects Local Area
Station Commander Steve McGhie, speaking from the scene, said: "The fire is producing smoke that's affected the local area, residents nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed where possible." He added: "One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders is being deployed as a water tower, allowing crews to tackle the flames from above."
The London Fire Brigade received the first of 24 calls alerting them to the fire at 9.36pm. Fire crews from Surbiton, Kingston, Sutton, Wimbledon, and surrounding fire stations were mobilised and remain in attendance.
Residents Warned to Keep Doors and Windows Shut
A spokesperson for the Brigade said: "The fire in New Malden is producing smoke that's affected the local area, residents nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed where possible." Pictures taken at the scene show water being pumped into the building in an attempt to extinguish the fire.
Cause of Blaze Not Yet Known
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage. Fire crews remain at the scene, and residents are advised to continue following the safety guidance until the incident is resolved.
