President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday that directs federal agencies to expand access to psychedelic medications for the treatment of mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression.

The order instructs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to develop a plan within 90 days to increase the availability of psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin, MDMA, and ketamine for therapeutic use. It also calls for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expedite the review of clinical trials involving these substances.
Trump said the move was prompted by the rising suicide rates and mental health crisis among veterans and the general population. “Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country, and we must ensure they have access to the most innovative treatments available,” he said in a statement.

The order has drawn mixed reactions. Advocates for psychedelic therapy, such as the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), praised the move as a “historic step” toward evidence-based treatments. However, some medical experts and lawmakers expressed caution, citing the need for more research on long-term safety and efficacy.
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) criticized the order, calling it “a reckless attempt to bypass scientific rigor.” Others noted that the executive order does not change federal drug scheduling, meaning psychedelics remain illegal under the Controlled Substances Act.
