Survey reveals summer disappointment widespread

One in six UK adults (16%) feel that summer never quite lives up to their expectations, according to a new survey by YouGov. The poll of 2,000 adults found that 42% of respondents said the weather was the main reason for their disappointment, while 28% cited the cost of living as a factor.

The survey, conducted in August 2024, also highlighted that younger people are more likely to feel let down by the season. Among 18-24 year olds, 23% said summer fails to meet expectations, compared to just 10% of those aged 55 and over. Additionally, 34% of respondents said they felt pressure to make the most of summer, with social media contributing to this feeling for 22% of those surveyed.

According to the research, 15% of adults said they have experienced anxiety or stress related to summer plans, and 12% admitted to going into debt to afford summer activities. Dr. Emma Jones, a psychologist at the University of Manchester, commented: 'The pressure to have a perfect summer can actually make people feel worse, especially when they compare their experiences to others online.'

Impact on mental health and well-being

The survey also found that 18% of respondents said summer negatively impacts their mental health, with 9% reporting feelings of loneliness during the season. For those with children, 21% said they feel stressed about keeping their kids entertained during the school holidays. The findings suggest that the 'summer blues' are a real phenomenon, affecting a significant portion of the population.

In response to the survey, the charity Mind recommended that people set realistic expectations and focus on small pleasures rather than grand plans. A spokesperson said: 'It's important to remember that summer doesn't have to be perfect to be enjoyable. Simple activities like a walk in the park or a picnic can bring joy without the pressure.'
