Marks & Spencer (M&S) has issued a recall for its Truffle Gouda cheese over fears of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious infections. The recall, announced jointly with the Food Standards Agency (FSA), affects products with the code 29424887 and a use-by date of October 9, 2026.

The recall applies specifically to Northern Ireland, where M&S stores that sell the Truffle Gouda have been instructed to display in-store notices. Customers are warned not to consume the affected cheese and are advised to return it to their nearest M&S store for a full refund. In a statement, M&S said: 'Please do not consume this product. Any customers in possession of this product can return it to their nearest store where a full refund will be given. Only the displayed date codes are impacted. No other M&S products are affected.'
Health risks of Listeria
The FSA's risk statement highlighted that symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can resemble flu, including high temperature, muscle aches, chills, nausea, and diarrhoea. Listeria can cause listeriosis, which is usually mild but can be severe for vulnerable groups. The FSA added: 'Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.' In rare cases, listeriosis can lead to serious complications such as meningitis.
