Fire at children's mini zoo kills all animals inside

A devastating fire at a children's mini zoo in Hertfordshire has resulted in the death of every animal inside the building. The blaze broke out at The Jungle Box, a combined soft play centre and mini zoo located in the Watermill Industrial Estate in Buntingford, around 3:19 AM on Wednesday.

Fire crews respond to significant blaze

Ten fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were dispatched to bring the fire under control. Smoke was seen billowing into the air as firefighters worked to contain the flames. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that no people were injured, but tragically, all animals present in the building at the time of the fire perished.

Animals lost in the fire

The zoo housed a variety of animals, including meerkats, owls, genets, iguanas, giant tortoises, and a 16-foot snake. None survived the incident.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Darren Cook stated: 'In the early hours of the morning we received calls to a significant fire at The Jungle Box in Buntingford. Crews worked hard to contain the fire and prevent it spreading to neighbouring units. I'd like to thank all crews for their professionalism and hard work and fire control colleagues for their calm and efficient handling of the calls.'

He added: 'We can confirm that a number of animals were inside the building at the time of the fire and did not survive.'

Public safety measures

Residents living near the fire were advised to keep windows and doors shut. Road closures were implemented on Aspenden Road and London Road to facilitate emergency services.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. The Jungle Box, described as a 'fun-filled jungle-themed indoor soft play' with slides, tunnels, a mini zoo, and a dedicated area for children under five, has been contacted for comment.
