Details of the Campus Attack

The victim, a man in his 20s identified in heartfelt tributes as Khaleed, was discovered collapsed on Oxford Street within the De Montfort University campus at approximately 5pm. He had sustained serious stab wounds and was rushed to the Leicester Royal Infirmary for emergency treatment. Leicestershire Police have confirmed that an 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being held in police custody. Authorities have stated that the incident is not believed to be terrorism-related, but rather stemmed from an altercation between two men in the street. The suspect reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived.

Heartfelt Tributes and Community Response

Flowers and poignant messages have been left at the scene on the university campus, reflecting the deep sorrow felt by friends, family, and the wider community. One emotional note read: ‘To Khaleed and family. I am so saddened that your life has been taken too soon. My thoughts are with your family and friends.’

The Chancellor of De Montfort University has also paid tribute, expressing devastation over the tragic loss. In a statement left at the scene, the university said: ‘We are devastated by the tragic death of one of our students. Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by what has happened. We are offering direct support to students, staff and the family of the victim. We are working with Leicestershire Police as they investigate this tragic incident.’

Ongoing Police Investigation and Appeal for Witnesses

Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, the Senior Investigating Officer, provided an update on the case, emphasising the urgency of the investigation. ‘We are currently piecing together exactly what has occurred on the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane between, what is reported, as two men involved in a confrontation,’ she stated.

DI Granville continued: ‘One of the men is believed to have been stabbed and has then collapsed in the street. Despite the best efforts of medical staff he died in hospital. CCTV in the area is currently being reviewed and officers are speaking to potential witnesses to assist with our investigation.’

Police have acknowledged that many people came to the aid of the victim before emergency services arrived and have thanked them for their assistance. However, they are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has not yet come forward to contact them immediately. The appeal extends to motorists who were driving along Oxford Street at around 5pm, as dash cam footage could be crucial to the investigation.

A cordon remains in place at the scene, and local officers will be conducting reassurance patrols in the area over the coming days. DI Granville added: ‘I appreciate the incident has caused major disruption in the city, with a number of roads closed. We are working to reduce this impact as soon as we can. If anyone has any concerns, please speak to an officer.’

This tragic event has highlighted concerns about safety on university campuses and in urban areas, with the community mourning the loss of a young life cut short. The investigation continues as authorities work to bring clarity and justice to this devastating case.
