Former Student Launches Deadly Attack at Turkish Vocational School
In a shocking incident that has rattled the community, a recently expelled 18-year-old former student returned to his vocational high school in Siverek, Sanliurfa province, Turkey, armed with a shotgun and opened fire indiscriminately. The attack resulted in at least 16 people being wounded before the assailant ultimately took his own life.
Chaos and Panic as Shots Ring Out
CCTV footage captured the terrifying moments as the gunman, whose motive remains unclear, entered the school building and began firing at anyone within sight. Panicked students and staff were seen fleeing in fear, with some slamming doors to escape and others forced to run right past the armed attacker. One student recounted to the state-run Anadolu Agency how he and a friend jumped out of their classroom window to avoid the gunfire.
"He suddenly entered the classroom and fired. He fired four or five times. Two people were hit. He then went into the next classroom," the student was quoted as saying. "We first threw ourselves to the ground and then two of us jumped out of the window. He didn't say anything, he entered and started to shoot directly."
Victims and Response
According to Governor Hasan Sildak, the wounded included 10 students, four teachers, a canteen employee, and a police officer. While most victims received treatment locally in Siverek, five individuals with more serious conditions were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital. The school had been declared safe prior to the incident, with no permanent police officer assigned for protection, which Governor Sildak described as an "isolated incident."
Police special operations units were swiftly deployed after the attacker refused to surrender. "The individual was cornered inside the building through police intervention and died after shooting himself," Sildak told reporters, adding that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted. Media reports indicated the assailant had no criminal record but had allegedly threatened an attack on social media beforehand.
