An 11-year-old schoolgirl was left traumatised after making a horrific discovery on her school's playing field during a PE lesson on Monday morning.
Shock Discovery in the Fog
The pupil from Smestow Academy in Wolverhampton found the body of a man near the goal posts on Monday, January 19. The incident occurred at approximately 10.40am as her Year Seven class was the first to head out for physical education that day.
"My daughter phoned her mum up, screaming, and told her that she found a dead body by the goal posts on the field," the girl's father recounted. "She’s only 11 years of age. They went out for PE and it was very foggy this morning." He added that the experience had left his daughter "really shaken up," prompting the family to collect her from school early.
Police Investigation and School Response
West Midlands Police have identified the deceased as a 45-year-old man. Officers were called to the scene on Windmill Crescent and pronounced the man dead. His death is currently being treated as unexplained.
A police spokesperson provided details on the victim's last known movements and appearance: "He was seen at 1am on Wheatsheaf Road, Wolverhampton and was then sighted on the school grounds at 7.15am. He was last seen wearing a distinctive camouflage jacket, grey gilet, jeans, and a beanie hat. He was also carrying a red rucksack and may have been wearing sunglasses."
Specialist detectives are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and are supporting the man's family. The force has appealed for information from the public.
In response to the incident, the school was closed for the remainder of Monday on police advice. In a statement, Smestow Academy said the incident was "unconnected with" the school and that police had requested the closure to aid their investigation.
The school confirmed it would reopen on Tuesday, January 20, with pupil assemblies planned throughout the morning to offer reassurance. The statement added: "If your child has been affected, they can speak with their Head of House who will be able to provide specialist support."
Community Reaction and Support Offered
The shocking discovery has deeply affected the school community. Another relative of a student posted on social media, stating: "My nephew's class were the ones that found him. The school have offered counselling. Rest In Peace."
The school's prompt action in offering counselling and support to students has been a focal point in managing the aftermath of the traumatic event. The incident underscores the vulnerability of young witnesses and the importance of immediate psychological support following such events.
