Young Vic Unveils Thrilling 2026-27 Season with 'Thelma & Louise' Musical and Ben Whishaw
Young Vic's New Season: 'Thelma & Louise' Musical, Ben Whishaw

The Young Vic has revealed its highly anticipated 2026-27 season, marking the second full season under the leadership of new artistic director Nadia Fall. This lineup promises to be a dynamic and thought-provoking collection of productions, blending world premieres, English language debuts, and compelling revivals that will captivate London theatre audiences.

A Full-Throttle Start with 'Thelma & Louise'

Kicking off the season with a bang, the Young Vic will host the world premiere of a musical adaptation of Ridley Scott's iconic 1990s feminist thriller, Thelma & Louise. Scheduled to run from September 3 to October 24, 2026, this production is far from a conventional West End spectacle. Instead, it embraces the edgy, innovative spirit of the Young Vic, ensuring a fresh and intriguing take on the beloved road movie.

The creative team behind this adaptation is particularly noteworthy. Callie Khouri, who penned the original screenplay, has written the book, while alt country legend Neko Case composes the songs. Case's musical style, known for its brooding and surreal qualities, promises to bring a unique, non-traditional sound to the stage. The title roles will be portrayed by heavyweight British performers Amy Lennox and Rachel Tucker, adding further depth to this curiosity-piquing show.

Ben Whishaw Stars in 'Eurotrash'

Following this, the season continues with another major highlight: the English language stage premiere of Colin Teevan's adaptation of Christian Kracht's bestselling novel, Eurotrash. Running from November 13, 2026, to January 9, 2027, this production features acclaimed actor Ben Whishaw alongside Kathryn Hunter. They play a mother and son embarking on a road trip through the Swiss Alps, attempting to relinquish their vast family fortune and escape their troubled past. Directed by Walter Meierjohann, this drama is set to be a compelling exploration of family and legacy.

An Expansive and Diverse Lineup

Beyond these headliners, the Young Vic's season extends into summer 2027 with a rich array of productions. The UK premiere of La Distance by acclaimed Portuguese playwright Tiago Rodriguez will take place from January 22 to February 13, 2027. This French-language drama, with English surtitles, features original cast members Alison Dechamps and Adama Diop reprising their roles as a father and daughter navigating separation, hope, and parental bonds in a collapsing world.

Next, from March 5 to April 24, 2027, the season includes dissent, a new play from celebrated British playwright debbie tucker green. Known for her minimalist style and exploration of dark themes, this work delves into humanity's capacity for monstrous behavior, promising a powerful and provocative theatrical experience.

Closing the main stage offerings, Nadia Fall will direct the first UK revival of August Wilson's 2003 play, Gem of the Ocean, from May 14 to July 10, 2027. Set in 1904, this drama centers on Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old former slave, offering a profound look at history, memory, and resilience.

Intimate Productions in the Maria Studio

The Young Vic's smaller Maria studio will also host notable shows. Shedinburgh, running from September 19 to October 10, 2026, is a pop-up Edinburgh Fringe venue—literally a shed—that will bring a diverse program of theatre, music, and comedy to London after the festival. Following this, from October 22 to November 21, 2026, Ewa Dina will direct Theresa Ikoko's drama Girls, which explores the 2014 Nigerian insurrection and its impact on hundreds of girls. Additional Maria studio programming will be announced in autumn 2026.

Tickets for Thelma & Louise, Girls, Eurotrash, and La Distance will go on general sale starting April 23, 2026. This season underscores the Young Vic's commitment to innovative storytelling and diverse voices, solidifying its reputation as a leading force in London's cultural landscape.
