Three Marty McFlys Unite for Back to the Future's 40th Anniversary Musical
Three Martys for Back to the Future 40th Anniversary

In an unprecedented theatrical event, the West End production of Back to the Future the Musical will feature not one, but three actors portraying the iconic role of Marty McFly during a single performance this December.

A Triple Threat Time-Travelling Event

The special performance, scheduled for 3 December at London's Adelphi theatre, will see former leads Olly Dobson and Ben Joyce return to share the stage with current star Caden Brauch. The unique format will begin with Joyce as the teenage time-traveller, followed by Brauch taking the middle section, and Dobson concluding the main performance. All three actors will then unite for the final number, Back in Time, creating a spectacular finale.

Olly Dobson, who originated the role during the Manchester Opera House run in 2020 and the pandemic-delayed West End premiere in 2021, expressed his excitement about returning. "Originating the role of Marty is undeniably the highlight of my career," Dobson stated. "To be stepping back into his shoes for one night only is super exciting."

Celebrating Four Decades of Time Travel

This extraordinary event marks the 40th anniversary of the original 1985 film's release, which The Hollywood Reporter famously described as "fun at the speed of light" that would generate "high-octane box office dollars." The prediction proved accurate, spawning a beloved franchise that continues to capture audiences decades later.

Ben Joyce, who received a WhatsOnStage award nomination for Best Takeover for his performance as Marty, echoed Dobson's enthusiasm. "It's such a thrill to return to this production," Joyce said. "I'm so excited to perform alongside both Olly and Caden – it's not often you get three Martys on one stage!"

The current Marty McFly, Caden Brauch, joined the production earlier this year and will be part of this historic theatrical moment. Dobson's previous performance earned him an Olivier award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, highlighting the critical acclaim the production has received.

A Growing Tradition of Special Appearances

This triple-casting follows recent special appearances in the production, including Gok Wan's cameo as Principal Strickland on Back to the Future Day on 21 October – the date Marty travels to in Back to the Future Part II.

Such guest appearances and special cast reunions have become increasingly popular in West End productions, offering dedicated fans unique experiences. Recent examples include:

  • Five actors who played Rafiki uniting during a Lion King gala
  • Les Misérables bringing together stars including Patti LuPone and Michael Ball for its 40th anniversary
  • Three former Elphabas from Wicked announcing a joint concert tour for 2024

The 3 December performance promises to be another unforgettable moment in West End history, celebrating both the enduring legacy of the beloved film and the exceptional talent that has brought Marty McFly to life on stage.
