The eccentric and endlessly inventive world of Quentin Blake is rolling onto the London stage. Mrs Armitage on Wheels, one of the author's most cherished picture books, is being transformed into a brand-new musical set to premiere in the capital in 2026.
A Marvellous Stage Premiere
Announced today, the world premiere production will be a highlight of the Southbank Centre's popular Imagine festival. Families can experience the show from 18 to 21 February 2026. The theatrical adventure, which will feature a blend of clever puppetry and original live music, is already generating excitement, with tickets scheduled to go on sale to the public on 20 November.
The Creative Force Behind the Adaptation
Spearheading the project is Samantha Lane, the artistic director of the award-winning Little Angel Theatre, who will both direct and adapt the story for the stage. The production is inspired by the BBC animated series, Quentin Blake’s Box of Treasures.
Lane expressed her enthusiasm, stating: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be adapting and directing Mrs Armitage on Wheels for the stage. It’s such a joyful, imaginative story – full of heart, humour, and the boundless possibilities of creativity.” She added that she is eager to bring the character's spirit of inventiveness and togetherness to life for London audiences.
What to Expect from the Story
The musical will follow the wonderfully chaotic adventure of the titular Mrs Armitage, an Inventor Extraordinaire. The story begins with her setting off on a simple bicycle ride to visit her cousin, Angela, accompanied by her faithful dog, Breakspear. However, her journey is anything but simple, as a series of her famously “essential improvements”—including the addition of horns, umbrellas, and even a sail—turn the peaceful trip into a delightfully madcap escapade.
The talented creative team assembled to realise this vision includes:
- Jessie Maryon Davies on music and lyrics.
- Ryan Dawson Laight handling set and costume design.
- Maia Kirkman-Richards leading puppetry design and direction.
- Ian Oakley in charge of sound design.
The show is being developed in collaboration with Eagle Eye and the Little Angel Theatre, promising a production full of the signature eccentricity and heart that defines Quentin Blake's work.
