Punchdrunk Founder Reveals Video Game Inspirations Shaping Immersive Theatre's Future
Punchdrunk Founder: Video Games Transformed My Life and Theatre

Punchdrunk Founder Credits Video Games for Revolutionary Immersive Theatre Direction

Felix Barrett, the visionary founder of Punchdrunk, has openly shared how video games have profoundly shaped his approach to immersive theatre, marking a significant evolution in the company's creative journey. Founded in 2000, Punchdrunk has become synonymous with large-scale, intricate productions that allow masked audiences to explore vast, actor-filled environments freely. Iconic works such as The Drowned Man (2013), Sleep No More (2003, notably revived in New York in 2011), and The Burnt City (2022) have set benchmarks in the genre, blending dance and silent storytelling across expansive spaces.

New Experiments in Woolwich: From Viola's Room to Lander 23

Since relocating to a permanent space in Woolwich, Punchdrunk has ventured into smaller, more experimental productions. This shift began with Viola's Room, an interactive narrative experience, followed by Lander 23. In Lander 23, teams of four participants engage in a real-world video game-like scenario, scoring points for objectives and risking lives if caught by NPC enemies. This adrenaline-fueled experience encourages players to hide behind props, adding a layer of thrill distinct from the company's earlier works.

In an exclusive interview, Barrett elaborated on this new direction. "As soon as you give audience agency, you're in the realm of gaming," he stated. "The word 'immersive' actually comes from video games. For the generation beneath my kids, they'll ask, 'What's the live action equivalent of a video game?' Lander 23 is the first step in exploring that."

Gaming Mechanics and Influences: From Resident Evil to Breath of the Wild

Barrett revealed that video games have always been integral to Punchdrunk's DNA. He recalled being mesmerized by Resident Evil as a teenager, noting its film-like interactivity. Sleep No More incorporated gaming elements like unlockable spaces for secret content. With Lander 23, the aim was to tailor these mechanics more personally, introducing jeopardy and lives that can be lost, akin to playground games like tag.

"We need an outlet as adults to experience danger in a safe way," Barrett explained. "The world is dangerous, so it's nice to have a place where it's safe to feel that danger." He emphasized that the three-life rule in Lander 23 is flexible, rarely penalizing participants unless they are disruptive.

Looking ahead, Barrett plans to evolve Lander 23 with more game mechanics, narrative depth, and automation, starting development in early May. He cited Breath of the Wild as a model for gaming perfection, where a clear goal allows for myriad paths, a concept he hopes to replicate in future iterations.

Broader Inspirations and Financial Realities in Immersive Theatre

Beyond video games, Barrett drew inspiration from diverse sources. He mentioned an Alien experience at the Trocadero, where an actor disguised as an audience member was abducted, and film directors like David Lynch and Lars von Trier. Robert Wilson, an American theatre director, was also a key influence for creating atmospheric environments.

Reflecting on the term "immersive," Barrett expressed concern over its overuse, which he believes has diluted its meaning and often implies poor quality. Financially, he acknowledged the high costs of productions, noting that Broadway shows can cost around £30 million with low recoupment rates. To sustain creativity, Punchdrunk balances large, wage-intensive shows with smaller, quicker projects like Lander 23, aiming for tourable works to reach global audiences.

Future Projects and a Commitment to Innovation

With the Woolwich space enabling increased output, Barrett is eager to experiment further. "I'm just desperate to try more things and fail more," he said. "Discover things we won't do again and things we will. The worst thing is to stagnate and repeat yourself." Three new projects are in the pipeline, though their order remains uncertain.
