A musical adaptation of David Nicholls' tearjerker novel 'One Day' is heading to the West End. The all-singing version of the story about soulmates Emma and Dexter will open at the Garrick Theatre in London following a tryout run in Edinburgh.
From Page to Stage
David Nicholls' 2009 novel follows Emma and Dexter, who spend the night together as students on July 15, 1988. The story revisits them on that same day for the next 20 years, charting a dizzying selection of ups and downs. The book was adapted into a film in 2011 and a Netflix series a few years ago, and now it reaches its final form as a musical.
Creative Team
The musical began its life at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh earlier this year. Top playwright David Greig, the theatre's outgoing artistic director, wrote the book. Songs are by Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez, with direction from Max Webster, whose West End hits include 'Life of Pi' and the National Theatre's 'The Importance of Being Earnest'.
The production debuted in March with a cast headed by top West End stars Jamie Muscato, currently the Emcee in 'Cabaret', and Sharon Rose, known for 'Hamilton' and 'Sylvia'. They will reprise their roles for the London transfer.
Critical Reception
There was some controversy regarding the Edinburgh run, as critics were not invited. Producers wanted to keep their powder dry for the rapid London transfer. While this is a first-world problem, it means there is no critical word on the show's quality. However, word of mouth suggests it was decent, and the initial run was extended by a fortnight.
The West End revival of 'The Producers' will conclude in September to make way for 'One Day', so those wishing to see it should get their skates on.
'One Day' is at the Garrick Theatre, booking from November 17 to March 14, 2027.
