The Artist, a period comedy created by writer-director Aram Rappaport, is a singular work of television that defies easy categorization. The series, which aired in the US on Rappaport's own streaming service, The Network, is a flamboyant and often exhausting exploration of art, ego, and power set in early 20th-century Rhode Island.
A Vision Without Compromise
Rappaport founded The Network in 2024, launching it with his debut series, The Green Veil. The Artist, his second series, was produced without the usual network oversight, allowing Rappaport to realize his vision without compromise. The result is a show that is unlike anything else on television, for better or worse.
The Premise
Set in 1906, the story revolves around the eccentric robber baron Norman Henry (Mandy Patinkin) and his wife Marian (Janet McTeer). Norman has just died, and the series unfolds through flashbacks to his final days. The couple's relationship is strained, with Marian's sharp mind and frustration finding outlets in a boxing coach and a ballerina, while the household staff lives in tents on the lawn, summoned by an elaborate system of bells.
Historical figures such as Thomas Edison (Hank Azaria) and a nearly blind French artist (Danny Huston) visit, along with the celebrated model Evelyn Nesbit (Ever Anderson). These guests, each with their own artistic or academic bent, drive the already tense couple to the brink, leading to shouting matches, profanity, and physical confrontations.
The Cast
Rappaport has assembled a dream cast, with Patinkin delivering lines like "You lack the ferocity to succeed" with impeccable timing. McTeer is superb as a raging, scheming tangle of frustration. Patti LuPone appears near the end as Marian's waspish sister, delivering a memorable performance. The cast also includes Hank Azaria and Danny Huston, adding depth to the already rich ensemble.
The Tone
The series has an arch, anarchic tone reminiscent of Amadeus or The Great, but with a darker undercurrent. The subtitle, An Allegory of a Prostitute, hints at a theme about the struggles of those without power in the early 20th-century arts scene. The show can be exhausting, but it is also compelling and unique.
The Artist is available on MGM+. It is a must-watch for those who appreciate bold, unconventional storytelling.
