A new anniversary edition of the ZX Spectrum is being released, marking the 44th anniversary of one of the most iconic home computers of the 1980s. The ZX Spectrum, known for classic titles such as Manic Miner and Chuckie Egg, has been recreated in a full-sized white version by Retro Games in collaboration with Plaion Replai, the company behind retro hardware re-releases like The C64 Mini and The A500 Mini.
Full-Sized Recreation with Modern Touches
Officially titled the Spectrum White ZX Spectrum, this is not a miniature replica but a full-scale recreation featuring a rubber keyboard and 48 built-in games. Included titles are Manic Miner, Head Over Heels, The Great Escape, Saboteur! Remastered, and the text adventure The Hobbit, the first video game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's works. The hardware includes modern features such as HDMI output for connection to TVs or monitors, USB ports for controllers, and a rewind function similar to Nintendo Switch Online's retro library.
Pricing and Availability
The white ZX Spectrum is available now on Plaion's website for £129. It comes with a classic joystick resembling the Competition Pro 5000, a reprint of Crash magazine, and a USB Microdrive for storing games. Users can also load additional ROMs. A matching gamepad, compatible with other retro hardware, is sold separately for £19.99.
Collector's Edition
A collector's edition, priced at £199.99, includes the gamepad and a plug-in printer to capture gaming moments or BASIC code in monochrome. This edition is available for pre-order with shipments starting June 26 and is limited, as stated on Plaion's website: 'Once it's gone, it's gone.'
Company Statement
Retro Games managing director Paul Andrews said: 'Releasing The Spectrum White Edition on the anniversary of the original ZX Spectrum feels incredibly special for us. That machine changed everything for so many people, not just as players, but as creators. The White Edition celebrates that legacy while giving fans a new way to experience it today.'
