A spy thriller hailed by critics as 'phenomenal' is now available for streaming on Netflix in the United Kingdom. Originally broadcast by the BBC in 2018, the series features an all-star ensemble including Florence Pugh, Alexander Skarsgård, and Michael Shannon. Based on a novel by the acclaimed author John le Carré, The Little Drummer Girl begins in the aftermath of a terrorist attack in West Germany.
Plot and Premise
Fearing further attacks, Mossad agent Martin Kurtz, portrayed by Michael Shannon, recruits an English actress named Charlie, played by Florence Pugh, to infiltrate a dangerous terrorist cell. To draw her in, the agency employs the charming Becker, played by Alexander Skarsgård. For those missing The Night Manager, this series offers a similar blend of intrigue, plot twists, and international adventure.
Critical Acclaim and Reception
The Little Drummer Girl currently holds a 95% positive rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Metro’s Adam Miller called it 'a great female superhero tale,' while Screen Rant described the cast as 'phenomenal' and praised filmmaker Park Chan-wook's direction as 'masterful.' The Independent asserted that 'almost everything about this production is wonderful,' and The Times labeled it 'addictive.' Audience reviews are equally glowing, with Rotten Tomatoes user K Y calling it 'deliciously filmed' and another describing it as 'superbly acted and beautifully filmed!'
Florence Pugh's Performance
Gareth V noted, 'It is Pugh’s show, and she proves to be one of the finest talents of her generation.' Pugh was handpicked for the role by director Park Chan-wook, who recently returned to the big screen with No Other Choice. In a 2018 interview with Metro, Pugh described her character Charlie: 'She is gobby, she is fierce, she is very intelligent and funny, and she has a brilliant ability to manipulate a situation in the way that she wants.' She added, 'But those are her qualities... what’s so fantastic about Charlie is that she’s very normal. I think that’s quite unique and special. We look at her and think, “She reminds me of all the special women in my life.” There’s nothing that amazing other than the fact that she’s normal.'
Alexander Skarsgård on the Show's Balance
Skarsgård revealed that he would not have joined the project if it had shown any bias. He told Metro, 'I would not have been in it had it not been a black and white, the good Israeli Mossad agents versus the evil Palestinian terrorists. But I knew that wouldn’t be the case. I’d read a couple of Le Carré’s novels prior to this, and he’s an extraordinary, intelligent writer, and he makes it morally difficult for you to pick a side, which is very, very important because I think it’s crucial to understand the plight of the other side.'
All six episodes of The Little Drummer Girl are now streaming on Netflix UK.
