Sandfall Interactive has marked the first year anniversary of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with a makeover update for Gustave, Maelle, and the others. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has become one of the most acclaimed video games ever, picking up nine awards at The Game Awards and the biggest prize at this year’s BAFTA Games Awards. As the game’s victory lap starts to wind down, developer Sandfall Interactive has capped things off with a special one year anniversary update for the role-playing adventure, which released on April 24, 2025.
Sadly it isn’t as substantial as the Thank You update last year, which added tougher boss variants, but it does give Gustave an A-grade mullet. In fact, every party member has been given a new hairdo to mark the occasion. Sciel’s new look is the most glam but the standout might be Monoco, who has been given some apt French braids. Gustave’s anniversary haircut can be bought from the Gestral Merchant near Stone Wave Cliffs, while the new wigs for Verso, Maelle, Lune, Sciel, and Monoco can be unlocked from the Gestral Merchant near Grosse Tête on the world map.
Anniversary Update Details
The anniversary update fixes minor issues related to collision detection and rest points too. You can find the full patch notes here. The developer posted on social media: 'We're pushing a fun little update live today – a new set of haircuts will be available to collect in-game!! This expedition WILL be strutting around in style for their first anniversary.' Another post read: 'Tomorrow marks one year of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33!! To celebrate the occasion, the team put together this piece of artwork that we hope you'll enjoy! And if you know someone who wants to pick up the game, we're running a 20% sale right now on Steam!!'
'Thank you for all of your support this entire year!!' a post from the developer reads. 'We wish you a wonderful anniversary day and hope you enjoy some cake to celebrate with us.' Additionally, if you haven’t yet tried it out, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently 20% off on Steam at £33.59.
What’s Next for Clair Obscur
The big question now is what’s next for Clair Obscur and Sandfall Interactive. The game’s director, Guillaume Broche, previously said he sees Clair Obscur as a 'franchise name' but it’s unclear if we’ll see a direct sequel or just something else set in the same universe. 'For me, we have to find this place of sincerity and authenticity again and just do what we love, and ignoring what made Expedition 33 so successful in a way,' Broche said at the time. Potential sequel aside, there are also rumours of a Nintendo Switch 2 port, which feels inevitable in light of the game’s success. A movie adaptation of the game has also been mooted, although whether that will actually happen or not remains to be seen.
