A new pizza spot is set to take central London by storm this summer. Carmy's, a New York-style slice shop from the team behind the acclaimed Carmela's in Islington, will open at 1 Monmouth Street in Covent Garden. The launch is highly anticipated, as Carmela's has been recognized by Time Out as one of the best places for New York-style pizza in the capital.
What to Expect from Carmy's
Carmy's will focus on quick, order-and-go service, offering just three types of individual slices: cheese, pepperoni, and a rotating special. Unlike traditional pizzerias, there will be no whole 18-inch pies, no reservations, no dining room, and no overcomplication. The mantra is 'product, consistency, and speed'. All ingredients will be sourced from the UK or Italy, mirroring the quality standards of Carmela's.
The Team Behind Carmy's
The founding trio consists of Phil Chaykin, Gerry del Guercio, and Paul Delany. Chaykin is also the founder of Ugly Dumpling in Soho, while del Guercio and Delany are known as the social media restaurant reviewers Bite Twice. Their combined experience promises a top-tier pizza experience.
London's Love for New York-Style Pizza
London's pizza scene has evolved significantly. While Neapolitan-style pizza still has its fans, the city has developed a strong appetite for New York-style pies, characterized by a thin, crispy base and thick marinara topping. Carmy's joins a growing list of NYC-style pizzerias in London, including Bad Boys Pizzeria, Crisp, and Vincenzo's.
An announcement from the new slice shop stated: 'Carmy's isn't trying to reinvent pizza. It's trying to do New York slices properly, in a city that's only just starting to take them seriously.' An exact opening date has not yet been announced, but the shop is expected to open in the summer of 2026.
