Child Author Breaks World Record, Champions Diversity

Young Author Shatters World Record with 58,000-Word Novel

Hephzibah Akinwale, a remarkable 12-year-old from Cambridgeshire, has achieved an extraordinary feat by securing the world record for the longest fiction novel ever written by a child author. Her book, Chronicles of the Timekeeper, boasts over 58,000 words, a milestone she reached at just ten years old. This accomplishment not only highlights her literary talent but also serves as a powerful inspiration for young writers everywhere.

A Journey Sparked by Frustration and Vision

Hephzibah's journey into authorship began with a simple yet profound observation at the age of eight. While visiting her local libraries in Cambridgeshire, she grew increasingly frustrated by the noticeable lack of diversity, particularly the absence of Black heroines in the stories available. She expressed her concerns to her mother, Chika, who responded with a challenge: "Instead of complaining, why don't you make the change?"

This pivotal moment ignited Hephzibah's determination to create the representation she longed to see. She channeled her love for reading and writing into crafting Chronicles of the Timekeeper, a magical narrative where dreams and reality intertwine. The protagonist, named after Hephzibah herself, was an intentional choice to ensure readers learn to pronounce her unique name and see a character that reflects her identity.

Recognition and Impact Beyond the Record

Since breaking the record on September 21, 2023, Hephzibah has garnered significant acclaim. She was honored with the Next Generation Award at the Forbes Women Africa Awards 2025 and recently clinched the Kidpreneur of the Year title at the West London Business Awards 2026. Her work has also taken her to iconic venues like Leadenhall Market in London, where she participated in a youth pop-up market organized by Julian Hall, allowing her to engage with Londoners and tourists.

Despite these accolades, her mother, Chika, emphasizes that Hephzibah has maintained her humility. "Despite everything she's achieved, her humility has always remained," Chika shared. "She doesn't brag about it. You have to bring it out of her, and that's what I admire the most." This grounded attitude extends to her school life, where she balances her writing with typical 12-year-old activities, receiving occasional congratulations but not letting it dominate her daily routine.

Advocating for Diversity and Future Aspirations

Hephzibah's mission goes beyond personal achievement. Through her No Approval Needed collection, she offers products like mugs and T-shirts featuring diverse characters, aimed at making every BAME girl feel represented and valued. This initiative stems from her own experiences, including struggles with hair identity and a lack of costume options for Black characters during World Book Day events.

Looking ahead, Hephzibah plans to publish more books in the Chronicles of the Timekeeper series and explore turning it into an animated series. Her message to others is clear: "I've done something amazing to help inspire future generations and help them know they can do whatever they want to do." By combining her passion with a commitment to diversity, she continues to inspire change while embracing her youth, proving that age is no barrier to making a significant impact in literature and beyond.
