The team behind Sune, a Broadway Market bistro previously described as 'practically perfect', is opening a pub and restaurant in Smithfield Market. The Poet will open this November in the historic meat market, which is currently undergoing a major redevelopment.
The Poet's location and team
The Poet will occupy a Victorian-era curved corner space once partially used by Bubb's Le Restaurant Français, which closed in the early 2000s. The team, comprising Charlie Sims, Honey Spencer and Spencer Large, will launch the venue with executive chef Charlie Tayler, who most recently cooked at the Michelin-starred Aulis in Soho, according to the Standard.
The establishment will feature separate pub and restaurant areas, with food available in both. The menu will include elevated pub dishes such as prawn Scotch eggs coated with scampi fries, smoked eel caesar salad, and a fallow deer and juniper suet pudding.
Expansion and nearby developments
The large space will see additional rooms opening next year, including an onsite cocktail bar called Shambles and a chef's table dining area on a mezzanine. The Poet will open around the same time as the new London Museum, which launches in Smithfield Market on November 28, after the closure of its Museum of London site at the nearby Barbican.
The £437m revamp project, a partnership between the City of London Corporation and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, marks the culmination of a decade-long transformation of Smithfield's historic General Market. The site is returning to public use for the first time in over 30 years.
