Mysterious Shell Grotto Tunnels Near London Discovered

A Londoner has shared her experience of visiting the 'most mysterious' tunnels near London, which she describes as 'out of this world' and a unique place for a stroll.

The Mysterious Shell Grotto

Ani, known on TikTok as 'wander_aniwhere', has gained thousands of followers by sharing her favourite things to do in and around London. In one video, she explored the Shell Grotto in Margate, Kent, calling it 'the most mysterious place in England'.

Hidden beneath Margate's streets, the grotto features about 4.6 million shimmering seashells. No one knows who built it, when, or why. Discovered in 1835, it is 70 feet (21 metres) of winding passages decorated with shells.

Shell Decorations and Mysteries

The walls are covered with images of gods and goddesses, trees of life, and patterns made from whelks, mussels, and oysters. Nearly all shells are native to the British Isles, but some exotic ones, like queen conches from the Caribbean, appear in the Altar Room.

Some believe it was an ancient Pagan grotto, while others think it is an ornate Regency folly. There is no definitive explanation, making it one of Kent's greatest mysteries.

Visiting the Grotto

The Shell Grotto is a museum open year-round, a 90-minute train journey from London St Pancras. Tickets cost £6 for adults, £5 for concessions, £2 for kids, or £13 for a family ticket. Carbon dating the shells could help uncover its origins, but the process is expensive.

Ani recommends wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a light layer for the chilly underground passages.

Public Reaction

Viewers were amazed. One person said, 'Years ago I saw this place as a kid... I must go back.' Another added, 'We have been here and it is beautiful!' A third noted there is a similar shell grotto in South Wales.
