London's First Fully Welsh Café Opens in Peckham to Immediate Success
London's culinary landscape has welcomed a groundbreaking new addition with the opening of Bara Café in Peckham, South East London. This establishment is believed to be the city's first café fully dedicated to celebrating Welsh produce and cuisine, and it has already become a bustling hotspot, with every table consistently full since its launch in February.
A Culinary Homage to Wales
The bakery and sandwich shop is a passionate tribute to Welsh ingredients, sourcing directly from Wales. The menu features iconic items such as Caerphilly cheese, Pembrokeshire shellfish, and coffee from Ammanford. Behind this venture are co-founders Cecily Dalladay, a quarter-finalist on MasterChef: The Professionals, and chef Zoë Heimann, who have been overwhelmed by the positive response, describing themselves as absolutely knackered but thrilled.
Cecily shared that the inspiration for Bara Café came from a remarkable coincidence involving a vintage family cookbook. About a year ago, I was looking at doing some Welsh food just generally... I found this old Welsh cookbook from the 1950s and it was really cute, she explained. About two weeks later, my dad texted me saying he found one of my grandma's books, and it was the exact same cookbook that I'd just bought two weeks earlier, but it had all of her little annotations in it - that's where the inspiration came from for the café.
Personal and Practical Choice of Location
For Cecily, choosing Peckham as the location was both personal and practical. She noted a lack of sit-down cafés in the area and highlighted her long-standing connection to the neighborhood. My mum's best friend, who's also Welsh, lives one street away, so I've always been coming to Peckham since I was a child, especially this area - so it just kind of felt natural, she said.
Community Response and Authentic Atmosphere
Since opening on February 12, Bara Café has quickly become a hub for the Welsh community in London. Zoë Heimann reported, It's been really busy every day since we've opened, we're absolutely knackered, but we're really happy that people are responding so well to it and there's been such an amazing community of Welsh people in London who've flocked to here. The cozy space is filled with families, and the low hum of conversation is often punctuated by the sound of Welsh being spoken, creating an authentic and welcoming atmosphere.
Menu Highlights and Culinary Delights
The menu at Bara Café is a love letter to Welsh produce, featuring dishes such as:
- Eight-hour smoked Welsh beef brisket with melted Caerphilly cheese
- Breakfast focaccia stuffed with smoked bacon, buttered leeks, cockles, and laverbread
- Weekend specials like Pembrokeshire lobster rolls and crab rarebit
- Fresh bakes and traditional Welsh fruit loaf, bara brith, served warm with thick Welsh butter
Patrons have praised the food, with one visitor noting that the bara brith was delicious, especially when paired with fresh coffee from Coaltown Beans, despite not typically being a fruit cake enthusiast.
Changing Perceptions of Welsh Cuisine
Cecily emphasized that Bara Café aims to change perceptions about Wales and its culinary offerings. I think people know very little about Wales - mostly people talk about Gavin and Stacey and Tom Jones - but there's so much more to Wales and so much to the food and ingredients we've got, she stated. The café serves as a platform to showcase the richness and diversity of Welsh food culture, moving beyond stereotypes to highlight authentic flavors and traditions.
With its immediate success and strong community support, Bara Café is set to become a staple in London's vibrant food scene, offering a unique taste of Wales right in the heart of Peckham.
