A food enthusiast set out to find the UK's most expensive jacket potato and was astonished by the price at a Michelin-starred restaurant in central London. Charlie Betts, who regularly explores London's diverse culinary scene, visited the Goring Dining Room in Westminster to sample what he believes is the priciest baked potato in the country.
The Quest for the Ultimate Jacket Potato
For many Brits, the classic jacket potato is a beloved midweek staple, easy to prepare and endlessly customizable with toppings like baked beans, cheese, or tuna mayo. But Charlie wanted to see how luxurious this humble dish could become. He documented his experience on TikTok, stating, "Apparently, this is the most expensive jacket potato in the UK. I have been looking for this product for a while."
A Royal Dining Experience
The Goring Dining Room, known for its popularity among the royal family, offered the jacket potato as part of a 'secret menu'. Before diving into the main event, Charlie and his companion indulged in starters: Wye Valley asparagus with a poached Clarence Court egg and spring emulsion sauce, and sea bream and scallop ceviche with Seville orange, seaweed, and fennel. They also received a complimentary amuse-bouche and freshly baked bread with butter.
The main attraction, listed as 'the Great Potato', arrived baked inside a sourdough loaf. The server sliced it open tableside to reveal a salt-baked deep purple violetta potato filled with raw cultured butter and topped with monthly specials. That month, it featured a mushroom bolognese. After the server fluffed the potato interior, Charlie added his own toppings, including sour cream, shallots, chives, a beef-based topping, and a generous grating of cheese.
Charlie praised the soft interior and the mushroom bolognese, noting that the potato skin was "very salty and nice." The total bill for lunch, including pudding, came to £247.83. The jacket potato alone cost £30, while the starters were £28 and £40 respectively. Reflecting on the experience, Charlie said, "That was a splendid experience, and yeah... that was unreal. The Great Potato as well."
