Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor whose career spanned five decades, has died at the age of 78. The news was confirmed by his family, who said he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
A career of versatility
Neill built a career playing dashing romantic leads and charismatic villains across film and television. He was best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the blockbuster Jurassic Park (1993) and as the stern but loving father in The Piano (1993), which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
His filmography includes over 70 films, ranging from Oscar winners to cult classics. He also starred in The Hunt for Red October (1990), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), and the television series Peaky Blinders.
Tributes pour in
Actors, directors, and leaders paid tribute to Neill, describing him as "a true gentleman" and "one of New Zealand's finest exports." Director Jane Campion, who worked with him on The Piano, said: "Sam brought a rare warmth and intelligence to every role. He will be deeply missed."
Neill was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1998 for his services to film. He is survived by his two children and his partner.
