A New Era for the Academy Awards
After more than a quarter-century at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, the Oscars will travel approximately nine miles (14.5 kilometers) to the Peacock Theatre within the LA Live complex. The venue boasts a capacity of roughly 7,000 attendees, nearly double the current seating arrangement, promising a more expansive celebration of cinematic achievement.
Venue Upgrades and Strategic Partnership
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor emphasized in a joint statement that the organization looks forward to collaborating closely with AEG to transform LA Live into an ideal setting for the global cinema celebration. As part of the agreement, AEG will implement substantial enhancements to the Peacock Theatre, including comprehensive upgrades to the stage, advanced sound and lighting systems, backstage facilities, and other critical areas.
The Dolby Theatre, nestled among the Walk of Fame, adjacent to the celebrity handprints at The Chinese Theatre, and with the legendary Hollywood sign as a backdrop, was originally developed by the Academy itself. It has served as the perfect location for the entertainment industry's premier awards ceremony since 2002. The venue will host the 100th anniversary Oscars in 2028 before the transition to the new location and broadcast platform.

This is not the first time the Oscars have ventured beyond Hollywood. In its early years, the ceremony was held at various hotels across Los Angeles before moving to theaters in the mid-1940s. From 1968 to 1986, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, a fine arts facility in downtown LA, served as the host venue. Subsequently, the show alternated between the Chandler and the Shrine Auditorium near the University of Southern California until the permanent move to Hollywood.
The Peacock Theatre, which originally opened as the Staples Center in 2007, has been the consistent home of the Emmy Awards since 2008.
