Former MasterChef presenter John Torode has disclosed that he has begun therapy to process the profound sense of loss he experienced after being dismissed from the BBC cooking show earlier this year.
The Fallout from a BBC Investigation
The 60-year-old television chef was removed from the popular competition following a corporation probe. The investigation centred on inappropriate conduct allegations concerning his long-time co-host, Gregg Wallace, 61.
The BBC's inquiry ultimately upheld 45 separate claims against Wallace, who subsequently issued an apology. It was also revealed that Torode himself had used racist language on two occasions during his tenure, amid a total of nine complaints made against him.
Torode's Candid Admission of 'Grief'
In the months since his exit, Torode has turned to professional help. Writing in his online newsletter, A View From the Fridge, he shared an emotional account of his struggle.
"Therapy over the past few months has entitled me to no longer 'be brave' but instead be real," Torode stated. He reflected on the damaging combination of grief and fear, questioning the impact of suppressing such emotions.
He described coming to terms with the last five months as a challenging process, acknowledging his "tumultuous physical, illogical and physiological state of mind." Torode emphasised that his life has changed irrevocably, stating his words were an exercise in honesty, not a search for sympathy.
Moving Forward and On-Screen Surprises
Torode explained that he started the newsletter to "find a rhythm" and has learned to find solace in life's unpredictability. He expressed gratitude to his subscribers for supporting this new venture, published via Substack.
Viewers were taken aback last month when a new series of Celebrity MasterChef began, featuring Torode alongside Grace Dent, Wallace's permanent replacement. Having been axed in July, many fans believed his final appearance was alongside Wallace in episodes filmed before the investigation concluded.
However, Torode's departure was finalised slightly later than Wallace's, allowing him to film a handful of celebrity episodes with Dent.
Speaking about the situation, Grace Dent told the Sunday Times she adores Torode but acknowledged the findings of the inquiry report made her personal recollections of their time together largely irrelevant. She added that she deliberately distanced herself from the controversy as she began her new role.
