Greek Police Dismiss Foul Play in Death of 'Tehran' Co-Creator Dana Eden
Greek police have definitively ruled out foul play in the death of Dana Eden, the 52-year-old co-creator of the acclaimed Israeli spy thriller series Tehran. Eden was discovered deceased in her Athens hotel room late on Sunday, with authorities attributing her passing to suicide following a thorough investigation.
Investigation Quickly Dismisses Rumors of Iranian Links
After initial media speculation suggested possible connections to Iran, Greek police launched an official inquiry within hours of the discovery. Officers collected testimony from hotel staff and secured security camera footage. Police spokesperson Constantina Dimoglidou stated that Eden's brother had informed investigators about his sister's history of medical treatment for a condition that had previously required hospitalization.
"An autopsy was automatically conducted in such circumstances, with results supported by the official investigation," Dimoglidou explained, effectively dismissing circulating rumors about criminal or nationalistic motives behind the death.
Production Company Confirms Tragic Loss
Donna and Shula Productions, the international production company Eden co-founded, released a statement describing her passing as "a moment of great sorrow for the family, friends, and colleagues." The company took the unusual step of explicitly denying "a criminal or nationalistic-related death," emphasizing that circulating rumors were "not true and are unfounded."
Eden's Legacy in Israeli Television
The award-winning television executive had been in Athens since February 4th, working on the fourth season of Tehran, which films in the Greek capital due to its architectural resemblance to Tehran. Eden won an Emmy for producing the Apple TV+ series and was considered a prominent figure in Israel's flourishing television industry.
Israel's public broadcaster KAN paid tribute, stating: "We are saddened by the passing of our friend and partner in a long line of productions, series, and programmes. Dana was among the senior figures in the Israeli television industry and played a central role in creating and leading some of the corporation's most prominent and influential productions."
'Tehran' Series and Its Impact
The spy thriller, starring Niv Sultan as Mossad agent Tamar Rabinyan, follows an Iranian-born spy raised in Israel who infiltrates Iran to dismantle its nuclear program. The New York Times described the series as so convincingly plausible in its portrayal of Israel's intelligence agency that "even the FBI director endorsed it." Meanwhile, Iranian authorities have repeatedly criticized the show as Zionist propaganda.
Athens has served as the production location since the series' inception, chosen for its similarity to Tehran with narrow streets, wide boulevards, mountainous surroundings, and Mediterranean light. The show's popularity prompted Apple TV+ to greenlight a fourth season in December.
KAN concluded its statement by noting: "Her professional and personal legacy will continue to shape Israeli television for many years to come."
