Lewes Cinema Nominated for Top UK Film Award, Just an Hour from London
Depot Cinema in Lewes shortlisted for BIFA Cinema of the Year

A beloved independent cinema in the heart of East Sussex has been recognised as one of the very best in the country, offering Londoners a compelling cultural day trip.

A Prestigious Nomination

The Depot Cinema in Lewes has been shortlisted for the inaugural Cinema of the Year 2025 award by the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). This marks the first time BIFA, an organisation established in 1998 to champion the entire UK independent film sector, has extended its recognition to the point of distribution with this new, publicly-voted prize.

The award specifically honours cinemas that have made substantial commitments to their local communities, sustainability, and accessibility. From an initial field of 130 independent movie theatres, only five made the final cut, with Depot securing its well-deserved place.

More Than Just a Cinema

Depot is far from your average multiplex. While it screens all the latest blockbusters, its heart lies in showcasing smaller independent films, alongside live-streamed opera, ballet, and theatre. The walls of its screens are adorned with artwork, creating a unique and cultured atmosphere.

The cinema is also a hub for frequent special events. A prime example is the upcoming Phantom of the Opera Soirée, where attendees will watch the original 1925 silent film followed by a full three-course meal inspired by the story.

Its excellence has been noted before; Time Out previously highlighted attending one of Depot's three annual film festivals as a top activity in Lewes, which it described as ‘the sleepier, quainter, more poetic neighbour to Brighton’.

Community Spirit and How to Vote

Carmen Slijpen, the cinema's founder, said the team is ‘over the moon’ at the nomination, calling it ‘a direct result of the whole community rallying together’. She is now urging the people of Lewes and every film enthusiast who has enjoyed a night at Depot to cast a vote.

Anyone can vote for Cinema of the Year. To support Depot, you simply need to fill out an online form and provide a short explanation about why you love the cinema. The winner will be announced at the BIFA ceremony on November 30.

Your Journey to the Depot

Getting to this cinematic gem from London is remarkably straightforward. A direct train runs from London Victoria to Lewes, taking just over 60 minutes. Without a railcard, a ticket costs around £35. Services depart twice an hour, and it's a mere three-minute walk from Lewes station to the cinema's doors.
