Brenda Fricker, the acclaimed Irish actor who became the first female Irish Oscar winner for acting with her role in My Left Foot, has died aged 81. Her agent Phil Belfield confirmed the news in a statement to the BBC, saying: “We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her … I was honoured to know, love and work with her and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over.”
Oscar-winning role in My Left Foot
In My Left Foot, directed by Jim Sheridan, Fricker played the mother of Christy Brown, a man with cerebral palsy who could only control his left foot. The film was released in 1989 to enormous critical acclaim. It won the best actor Oscar for Daniel Day-Lewis and the best supporting actress Oscar for Fricker, making her the first Irish-born actor to win an Academy Award.
Early life and career beginnings
Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker initially worked as an art editor at the Irish Times before turning to acting. She landed small roles in productions such as Of Human Bondage and Upstairs, Downstairs. In 1977, she was cast as a nurse in the British soap opera Coronation Street, and in 1986 she secured a regular role in the hospital drama Casualty.
Versatile film career
The success of My Left Foot positioned Fricker as a versatile and in-demand character actor. She appeared in a string of Hollywood, British, and Irish feature films. Notable roles included opposite Richard Harris in The Field, Albert Finney in A Man of No Importance, and high-profile US films such as Angels in the Outfield, A Time to Kill, and Veronica Guerin. She also played the “pigeon lady” in the 1992 comedy Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Her final credit was The Swallow, directed by Tadhg O’Sullivan.
Memoir and personal life
In 2025, Fricker published a memoir revealing harrowing details of past sexual abuse and rape, including an assault by a fellow actor on Coronation Street. She told the Guardian: “You think it’s your fault. You really do.” Fricker was married to Barry Davis from 1979 to 1988.
