John Boyega to Share Unheard Testimony in BBC Documentary on Damilola Taylor's Death
The BBC has announced that Star Wars actor John Boyega will feature in a new documentary examining the tragic death of his childhood friend Damilola Taylor. The programme, currently titled Damilola Taylor: The Last 24 Hours, will chronicle the final hours of the 10-year-old's life before he was fatally stabbed with a broken bottle on a stairwell just metres from his Peckham home on November 27, 2000.
Documentary to Feature Boyega's Personal Account
Boyega, who was among the last people to see Damilola alive, will provide previously unheard testimony about their friendship and the events leading up to the killing. The documentary will explore the impact of Damilola's death on those who knew him personally, including additional close friends and family members who will share their accounts of the tragedy and its lasting effects on their lives.
The murder dominated national headlines and became a pivotal moment in igniting widespread debate about knife crime in the United Kingdom. Damilola Taylor had expressed aspirations for a medical career and famously stated he wanted to change the world, making his untimely death particularly poignant.
Examining the Environment and Lasting Impact
Helmed by filmmaker Alex Thomas, the documentary will retrace Damilola's final day while examining the social environment and pressures that shaped the lives of young people in Peckham at that time. The film will also investigate the rise in knife-related crimes over the 25 years since Damilola's death, drawing connections between past and present challenges facing youth communities.
Thomas explained the documentary's unique perspective, stating: "Damilola's story has never been told through the experience of the young people who were living it at the time. This film shows what it meant to grow up in an environment shaped by fear, bullying and the need to protect yourself - and how those pressures influenced the choices people made."
The filmmaker added: "Twenty-five years on, those experiences still stay with them, and many of those pressures still exist for young people today."
Broadcast Details and Production
Damilola Taylor: The Last 24 Hours will be broadcast on BBC One and made available on iPlayer, though specific transmission dates and times have not yet been announced. The documentary represents a significant examination of one of Britain's most heartbreaking crimes and its enduring legacy in discussions about youth violence and community safety.
By featuring John Boyega's personal testimony alongside accounts from other individuals close to Damilola, the BBC aims to provide a comprehensive and emotionally resonant portrait of a tragedy that continues to resonate a quarter-century later.
