World's smallest beach Gulpiyuri hidden by locals for years

Gulpiyuri Beach, a secluded oasis in Llanes, Asturias, Spain, is widely regarded as the world's smallest beach, stretching just 40 meters in length. Tucked approximately 100 meters inland from the Cantabrian Sea, it is completely encircled by rolling green meadows and towering cliffs, making it one of the most unusual European shores. The beach features golden sand and crystal-clear blue waters around one meter deep, which flow through underground caves carved by erosion from the sea.

Locals kept the beach hidden for years

For years, Gulpiyuri Beach was kept under wraps by locals and naturally concealed by meadows, thanks to its inland position. During high tide, the waters engulf the sandy shore, temporarily diminishing any evidence of a beach, making it easy to miss. However, at low tide, azure waters seep through the caves, revealing a tropical oasis. Its remote location has helped preserve its unspoilt scenes.

How to visit Gulpiyuri Beach

Visitors can reach the beach via a path from the parking area near San Antolín Beach, with steps leading down from the rugged cliffs to the shore. One holidaymaker shared on TripAdvisor: "Very beautiful landscape, seen from above or below. We parked in the paid parking lot (€4), which is very large. It was quite cool outside, but mild and pleasant on the beach because it was sheltered." Another commented: "Unique beach because of the water emanating from the rock. You can take a towel and fridge.... There is room there, but when the water rises, the beach is over. It is important to check the tides before visiting."

Asturias: a natural paradise

Asturias, situated along Spain's northwest coast, is famed for its unique beaches, dramatic mountain backdrop, and thriving culinary scene. Dubbed a 'natural paradise', direct one-way flights from London Luton Airport to Asturias are available from as little as £17 and take just under two hours. A third visitor noted: "The beach is spectacular, as the setting is very peculiar, where mountains and beach meet." However, they warned about fines in an area with a poorly marked sign prohibiting entry, calling it a "revenue collection tactic by the locals."
