A stunning nature reserve just over an hour from London has been celebrated as one of Britain's finest walking paths. Thursley Common, a sprawling expanse in Surrey, was named 'Britain's best path' in 2024 by walking charity The Ramblers, and it offers a unique escape from the city.
Recovery After Devastating Fire
The common spans approximately 350 hectares in South West Surrey, comprising heathland, ponds, and woodland. Its boardwalk and enchanting pathway snake through the reserve, allowing visitors to watch wildlife and absorb breathtaking scenery. What makes this walk even more remarkable is that the site has only recently recovered from a catastrophic fire in May 2020, which consumed a third of the area and devastated an estimated 200-300 animal and plant species. Local residents were evacuated as flames spread swiftly, with massive smoke columns visible for miles and nearby roads closed.
Fire Safety and Conservation
Following the incident, the Friends of Thursley Common have emphasized the fire hazard, making it clear that barbecues are prohibited and smoking is not allowed. These measures are crucial to protect the fragile ecosystem that is still recovering.
Walking Routes and Activities
Numerous walking routes cover the common, offering Londoners the perfect escape from the city with opportunities to spot foxes, deer, birds of prey, and lizards. Parking is available at the Moat car park and within Thursley Village. Beyond walkers, the location is popular with horse riders and cyclists, while the Friends of Thursley Common organize activities to entertain children. The boardwalk, restored after the fire, is the perfect place to stroll and take in nature, giving the reserve an otherworldly quality.
