Brockwell Park Festivals Given Green Light for 2026 Despite Community Protests
In a decisive move, Lambeth Council has unanimously approved planning permission for four major music festivals to take place in Brockwell Park during the summer of 2026. The decision, made after an hour of debate on Tuesday evening, February 24, 2026, allows event organiser Brockwell Live to proceed with day festivals Field Day, Cross the Tracks, City Splash, and Mighty Hoopla from May 23 to 31.
Council Vote Overrides Local Opposition
The approval comes as a relief to festival organisers, following a legal battle in 2025 where anti-festival campaign group Protect Brockwell Park (PBP) successfully challenged the events' previous operation under permitted development rights. This marks the first time full planning permission has been required for the festivals to run in the south London park.
Summer Events Ltd, which manages the Brockwell Live series, submitted its initial planning application in 2025. The council has now granted temporary permission for the company to use the park for 32 days from May 9 to June 9, 2026, including set-up, show days, and wet weather buffer days.
Mixed Reactions from the Community
At the council meeting, Joe Elkins, event director at Brockwell Live, emphasised the festivals' cultural significance, stating, 'The events are a reflection of the diversity, creativity and spirit that makes Lambeth and London extraordinary.' However, opposition persists among some locals.
Michael Taylor, chair of the Friends of Brockwell Park, criticised the decision, arguing, 'It is irrational to conclude that there is only limited temporary harm in the delicate heritage balance.' Despite this, planning officers recommended approval, citing that the events are time-limited and reversible, with cultural, social, and economic benefits outweighing temporary impacts.
Not All Events Will Proceed
While the four approved festivals move forward, alternative indie music festival Wide Awake will not take place in 2026, with organisers announcing it is 'taking a break for 2026.' Additionally, the free community event Lambeth Country Show has been cancelled for this year.
The approval follows a new objection from PBP after Summer Events Ltd applied for the required planning permission, highlighting ongoing tensions between festival promoters and local residents. The decision underscores the balance between supporting London's vibrant event scene and addressing community concerns over park usage.
