US Pride celebrations draw thousands amid anti-trans policies

Thousands of people participated in Pride parades and festivals across the United States over the weekend, concluding Pride month on the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall uprising that catalyzed the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The celebrations occurred as President Donald Trump continues to roll back transgender rights and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

NYC Pride draws massive crowds

New York City's 57th annual Pride march took place on 28 June along Fifth Avenue from Midtown to Greenwich Village, with the theme 'For All of Us' honoring the legacy of Marsha P Johnson. Carlos Duarte, an attendee, said: 'It's very important for us to be here … all together for love, peace and to show the world who we are.'

Notable grand marshals included comedian and actor Bowen Yang, as well as the direct action group Gays Against Guns, founded after the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting that killed 49 people. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also participated in the march.

Dyke March and other events

On 27 June, the 34th annual New York City Dyke March drew thousands along Fifth Avenue, ending in Washington Square Park. The march, a staple of Pride weekend, celebrates lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer women and nonbinary people.

Pride across the country

In San Francisco, revelers attended the annual Pride parade on 28 June, with large crowds lining the streets. Nashville, Tennessee, held its Pride parade on 27 June, while St Petersburg, Florida, saw participants including 15-year-old Tyler Coyle celebrating on Saturday. Denver's Pride parade featured the Airheads of Colorado marching group.

The NYC Pride march originated as a demonstration honoring the 1969 Stonewall riots and has evolved into a global symbol of LGBTQ+ resilience, unity, and activism. This year's events took place against a backdrop of political challenges, with Trump's administration targeting trans rights and DEI programs.
