Notting Hill Carnival organisers call for better understanding of its real meaning
Notting Hill Carnival organisers urge public to learn its true meaning

Allyson Williams, founder of the Genesis Mas band and widow of Notting Hill Carnival co-founder Vernon Williams, has said that work remains to educate the public about the event's true meaning. Speaking at the launch of the 2026 carnival, she recalled a conversation with a local resident who admitted: 'I had no idea it meant anything to anybody. I just thought it was a big party or something.' The resident, who had lived in the area for 30 years, added: 'It never dawned on me to ask. It never dawned on me to find out why it was so important. We just thought it was a nuisance two days of the year.'

Origins and significance of the carnival

The Notting Hill Carnival began in 1966 as a cultural celebration following race riots in the area. It honours Caribbean heritage and the emancipation of slaves. Vernon Williams emigrated from Trinidad and Tobago in the 1960s and helped found the event. This year marks its 60th anniversary, with Allyson Williams involved for 45 years. She described the carnival as a 'spectacle' that 'celebrates the legacy and heritage' of the Caribbean community and serves as a 'very powerful way of uniting the community.'

Ongoing misconceptions and education efforts

Despite its growth to attract around two million people annually, Ms Williams believes misconceptions persist. 'We really need to keep educating the public and educating people all the time about the significance of the carnival,' she said. 'We still have work to do.' She emphasised that the carnival helps Caribbean people 'pay homage and respect to their ancestors who died and suffered so much on our behalf.'

A sound system operator's perspective

Gladwin Wright, one of the longest-running sound system operators at the carnival, has attended for nearly 40 years. He said he 'looks forward to it every year' and compared it favourably to Christmas: 'You'd have to put 10 Christmases together to grab the vibration a carnival gives me.' The 2026 Notting Hill Carnival runs from August 29 to 31.
