In a significant announcement for British television, Richard Osman has confirmed he will be stepping down from his hosting duties on the popular BBC quiz show House of Games after an impressive nine-year tenure. The 55-year-old presenter and bestselling author made the revelation during his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, with co-host Marina Hyde, where he expressed both gratitude and a sense of closure regarding his departure.
A Career Shift to Focus on Writing
Osman explained that his decision mirrors his previous exit from the show Pointless, driven by a desire to dedicate more time to his highly successful Thursday Murder Club novel series. He emphasized that the demands of his writing career have reached a point where he must pass the torch to a new host. "I am leaving House of Games. It will no longer be Richard Osman's House of Games. It will be somebody else's House of Games. I gladly hand over the keys," Osman stated, highlighting his willingness to support the show's continuation under new leadership.
Reflecting on a Legacy of 800 Episodes
During the podcast, Osman reflected on his extensive involvement with the programme, having completed approximately 800 episodes over the years. He shared personal anecdotes, including how he met his wife through the show, underscoring the deep emotional connections formed during his time as host. "I just wanted to go on record saying how much I love it and loved it," he remarked, adding, "I've loved it. Of course, I met my wife through it as well. Just with the writing, there comes a point where you have to hand it over."
The BBC has assured viewers that House of Games will continue production with its existing team, albeit with a different host. Osman confirmed he will film a final week of episodes to facilitate a smooth transition, during which he will officially hand over to his successor. "I've loved doing it so much and I'll be gutted when I don't do it anymore, but I had to, in the same way with Pointless," he admitted, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of his departure.
Co-host's Tribute and Humorous Send-off
Marina Hyde, his podcast co-host, thanked Osman for his contributions to the show, noting how it brought "joy" to her household. In a light-hearted moment, Osman joked about the future of the programme, saying, "Looking forward to Sue Pollard's House of Games," showcasing his characteristic wit even as he prepares to exit.
This move marks another pivotal moment in Osman's career, as he shifts focus from television hosting to further establishing himself as a prominent author in the literary world. Fans of House of Games can expect the show to maintain its format and team, with plans already in motion for a new host to take the reins in the coming months.
