Claudia Winkleman has stepped down from her self-titled BBC chat show after only one series, comprising seven episodes. The presenter, known for hosting The Traitors and formerly Strictly Come Dancing, admitted she was "just too nervous to enjoy" the conversations with high-profile guests.
Winkleman's Statement on Leaving
"I'm incredibly grateful to the BBC for giving me the opportunity, to the guests who agreed to come and chat to me, and the production team who were simply excellent," Winkleman said. "Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it. Maybe one day I will give it another try, but for now I already have the best jobs in the world and absolutely love the shows I'm doing."
The Claudia Winkleman Show launched in March 2024 and was seen as a major career move following her skyrocketing popularity from The Traitors. She had occasionally filled in for Graham Norton, whose show attracts over 2 million viewers per episode.
Ratings and Critical Reception
According to the BBC, Winkleman's programme averaged between 1.5 million and 2 million viewers per episode. Despite solid ratings, critics were divided. Guardian critic Lucy Mangan wrote of the opening episode: "We loved her on the radio, we loved her on Strictly Come Dancing, we revere her on The Traitors... And all of this remains true despite the unholy mess of the opening instalment of the long-and-loudly-heralded Claudia Winkleman Show."
Winkleman's departure highlights the challenges of the chat show format, which has proven difficult for many hosts. Davina McCall, who struggled with a similar show in 2006, later regretted making it. Winkleman had previously experienced stress during live interviews, including an incident where S Club 7's publicist halted an interview on Liquid News.
Industry Context and Future Plans
TV insiders questioned whether Winkleman would enjoy the formulaic format, given her strength in more improvisational roles. The chat show format faces increased competition from digital formats like podcasts and YouTube shows, such as Amelia Dimoldenberg's Chicken Shop Date.
Ed Havard, BBC's director of entertainment, said: "Claudia's warmth and quick wit made The Claudia Winkleman Show an absolute joy. Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision... As the host of the country's most-watched show, Claudia will be back on the BBC very soon when The Celebrity Traitors returns later this year."
