Chris Martin Reveals FIFA World Cup Halftime Show Lineup

Chris Martin has unveiled the lineup for the inaugural FIFA World Cup Halftime Show, set to take place on July 19 at New York's MetLife Stadium. The Coldplay frontman revealed that BTS, Shakira, and Madonna will perform during the final, aiming to rival the NFL's Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Announcement with a Twist

In a video shared on Instagram, Martin sat with Sesame Street's Elmo to discuss the event. 'What's a half-time show?' Elmo asked. Martin explained that the performance aims to raise money for children's education through a global concert. Advocacy platform Global Citizen is organizing the production in partnership with FIFA.

'It's where people get together, and there's singing, dancing, and music,' Martin said. 'It's a chance to show how amazing all different kinds of humans are. But this show is more about we than me. It's about togetherness.' Other Muppet characters, including Cookie Monster, Animal, Kermit, and Miss Piggy, helped reveal the performers.

Shakira's Anthem

Shakira will not only perform but also release an official World Cup anthem titled 'Dai Dai,' meaning 'Let's Go.' The track comes 16 years after her hit 'Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)' for the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Madonna's Return

Madonna's involvement coincides with her upcoming album 'Confessions II,' suggesting a major rollout. BTS returns from a long hiatus, exciting their dedicated fanbase. 'Worlds colliding and I'm here for it,' commented Stephanie Tea on Instagram, while Erigor added, 'Something crazy is cooking.'

Environmental Focus

Global Citizen's director of artist engagement, Anthony Alfano, emphasized the event's environmental focus. 'Chris and Coldplay have been pioneers in reducing carbon footprints on tour. We're taking a lead from them,' he said. Coldplay's Music of the Spheres tour achieved a 59% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to their previous tour. 'A lot of those elements will be part of the FIFA show,' Alfano added, highlighting efforts to reduce and offset carbon emissions.

The FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11, culminating with the final on July 19, featuring Madonna, Shakira, and BTS.
